Background[edit | edit source]

Power BI is used as the main BI tool in K'aute Pasifika.

Currently only a limited amount of Pro licences are available, primarily for team leaders and SLT. This may change in future depending on uptake and utilisation.

Key information[edit | edit source]

The approach used is to make all content available as Apps, using mail-enabled security groups for access.

Given the limited number of users, a single group 'PBI Aiga' is currently used. Also because of the relatively small number of apps, any content not relevant for all users is defined on a per-user basis in the App configuration.[1]

K'aute have Tenant Admin permissions, while Cloudland manage all licencing and group management.

Also note that a shared mailbox data@kautepasifika.co.nz is used to communicate to groups or provide updates where necessary.

Configuration[edit | edit source]

An 'on-premises' gateway is used to connect data sources to the Power BI service. This runs on CL1KPAAPP02 (primarily to have direct access to Aiga).

gateway name - "test"
gateway email - "data@kautepasifika.co.nz"
gateway password - "data@kautepasifika.co.nz email password"

Gateway connections[edit | edit source]

Current data sources and connection information is summarised in the following table:

Data source Type Connection info
Aiga Local SQL Server Set CL1KPAAPP02\sqlexpress as data source in app - gateway stores credentials to access this service

Connection Name - kaute-aiga

kpt-rds Cloud db Configured as system DSN (kptpg) and used in gateway connection string

DB user details;

Connection Name - kptpg
username - pbi_reader
password - YuO*******Nl
Kaute Postgres Azure DB Configured as cloud connection in PBI service
Sharepoint Configured as 'Web' connection using report author credentials[2]Connection Names -kaute-admin_receptionand kaute-admin_reception_2024

All Power BI app ownership is assigned to data@kautepasifika.co.nz.

Only this account has permission to manage the connections and the data gateway.
